Investigation into potential council merger confirmed
The Local Government Commission has confirmed they will investigate the prospect of a merger of councils in Southland. Southland District Mayor Rob Scott made the proposal in August last year to reorganise local government in Southland into two unitary authorities – one rural based and one for Invercargill city. A telescope with a unique history has made its way to Invercargill. And for now, it is providing a significant talking point as part of a new boutique design store that opened in the city last month. (READ MORE HERE).

The Mataura Valley Milk Hokonui Culture Feast has been named a finalist in the 2025 New Zealand Event Association (NZEA) Awards. The Culture Feast is a finalist in the Food, Beverage or Lifestyle Event of the Year. It is the only Southland event to make this year’s honours roll. (READ MORE HERE).
Averil’s big day out, that proved exactly that
Northern Southland owner Averil Fowler sponsored one of the feature events at Ascot Park in the Averil’s Big Day Out Gold Chip Final. The event was run just two races after Fowler watched her pacer Miki Cohen win at $21 odds for trainer-driver Kirstin Green. (READ MORE HERE).
