Why Southland is a gem…. Reason #45
(We think it’s worth reminding ourselves why Southland is such a special place, so that’s what we’ll do regularly)
Gemstone Beach at Orepuki. On Gemstone Beach the surf has been known to wash up semi-precious gems such as garnet, jasper, quartz and nephrite for keen explorers to find. The beach is in a constant state of change with the surface shifting from sand to stones with the storms and tides. 'Gems' have often been found amongst the beautiful array of multi coloured rocks, and in the least your fossicking is guaranteed to uncover some very interesting stones.
The rugged and remote location of Gemstone Beach means it is often deserted and the wild Southern Ocean feeds magnificent surf on to Orepuki Beach delivering some of the best surf NZ has to offer. Winter wetsuit recommended! Also a great beach for surfcasting. [Blurb credit Southland NZ].

Rates rise: “The increase is slightly higher than the 5.05 per cent forecast last year. As a community we’re going to face some difficult decisions to bring the budget back into balance next year.” (READ MORE HERE).
