The car and Esk St debate that keeps surfacing
It’s the topic that continues to come up. Both around the Invercargill City Council table and within in the community as a whole.
Would Esk St [from Kelvin St to Dee St] be better off long-term without cars? Should it remain pedestrian only, as it has been while the streetscapes work has been carried out recently? (READ MORE HERE). (Paid subscriber content).
The little club that's had a big impact - bigger than rugby
The Tokanui Rugby Club is - in some part - the heartbeat of the small rural town located on the Southern Scenic Route about 55 km east of Invercargill. “You think at times if Tokanui didn’t have the rugby club it would be a massive hole,” Phil Golden - who joined the club in 1979 straight out of school - says. Culhane’s Black Sticks call up….
Some massive news surfaced today [Thursday] for Southland hockey with Benji Culhane named in the Black Sticks men’s team.
The talented Southland sportsman has been included in the Black Sticks squad to take on Australia and Great Britain in Christchurch from April 22 to April 30.
Culhane has risen from the junior ranks in Invercargill to the big stage in what would be one of the most significant selections for hockey in Southland in many years.
The former Southland Boys’ High School pupil is also a talented cricketer representing Otago A and Southland at Hawke' Cup level.
He comes from strong sporting pedigree given both his mother Tania and father Simon impressive sportspeople in their respective fields.
We wish you well Benji.
Bloxham chalks up 100th game at the helm of Steel
Things aren’t exactly going to plan on the scoreboard for the Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel but head coach Reinga Bloxham wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.
She will chalk up her 100th game at the helm of the Steel against the Tactix in Christchurch on Sunday and the milestone has prompted plenty of contemplation. (READ MORE HERE).
Note from the Editor…
It’s been a busy but enjoyable first 10 weeks after launching The Southland Tribune. Firstly, thank to everyone who has supported this new venture in whatever way that might be. It means a lot.
I can ensure you it is not taken for granted and each and every subscriber is valued and treasured.
I’d like to think over a short period of time we’ve dished up some interesting Southland yarns, some that might have otherwise not been told.
It’s a fair challenge making this new offering work but I’m just as excited now as when the first Tribune edition was sent out on January 25.
The first 10 weeks has simply been about getting started. We will continue to evolve.
Like many, The Tribune is going to take a small breather over Easter. Although we will still send out a condensed Spotlight of Sport: Sunday Special to cover off a few things that are happening in the province.
Enjoy your Easter. And again, thank you Southland.

Round 7: Tribune’s Super Rugby Picks Panel
Scott Eade was the victor in round six picking all six winners correctly, with Matt Saunders and Jason Rutledge picking five from six. Eade’s decision to take the Chiefs in the showdown with Blues proved the difference.
Matt Saunders could close the gap this week if the Reds can get up against the Brumbies.
Overall standings: Scott Eade (167 points), Jason Rutledge (152), Matt Saunders (144).
Five points allocated for each winner picked, and a bonus point if the margin is also correct.
