NZ Music Month…. A Southlander’s song choice
It is New Zealand Music Month and we at The Southland Tribune are celebrating it. We’ve teamed with the crew at MASSAV Productions and throughout the month are asking various Southlanders to provide their favourite New Zealand song choice.
Today’s song selector: BLAIR SAVORY - Blair is the managing director of MASSAV Productions. He’s also a passionate music man.
Artist: The Checks
Blair’s song choice: Take Me There
Why? We all have those moments where we hear something for the first time and it stops us in our tracks. "The Checks" track "Take Me There" was one of those moments for me.
I immediately had to investigate more and quickly became educated that this was a NZ band and their debut album "Hunting Whales" had recently been released.
The Checks had come through the Smokefree Rockquest programme in 2003 and being a huge fan of the local underground music myself, it was great to see this platform providing exposure to a band with a fair swag of X factor.
"The Checks" released 2 further albums, "Alice By The Moon" and "Deadly Summer Sway" which are both equally as good as the debut. Their music is full of guitar and vocal melodies and every song from every album takes you on a journey.
Unfortunately, "The Checks" decided to disband in 2012. The only saving grace from the break up is that a couple of members went on to create the huge-sounding band "Racing". "The Checks" will forever be ingrained in NZ music history - in my mind at least.
