NZ Music Month…. A Southlander’s song choice
It is New Zealand Music Month and we at The Southland Tribune are celebrating it. We’ve teamed with the crew at MASSAV Productions and throughout the month are asking various Southlanders to provide their favourite New Zealand song choice.
Today’s song selector: LEON HARTNETT. Director of Greenlight Innovations, Helping Hands Southland and a Community Trust South trustee.
Artist: Dave Dobbyn. Do we really need to introduce him? A legendary New Zealand musician, singer–songwriter and record producer. In his early career, he was a member of the rock group The Dudes and was the main creative force in pop band DD Smash. Since then he has released the majority of his recordings as a solo performer.
Leon’s song choice: Welcome Home.
Why? It was a real challenge to pick one tune for NZ Music Month. So many great tunes, the Feelers were high on my list, as was crawl by Atlas.
I narrowed it down to songs that intrinsically speak of Aotearoa and was thinking about Aotearoa by Minuit but settled on Welcome Home.
Welcome Home by Dave Dobbyn was released in 2005 from the album Available Light. At this time I was just in the country a few months and was feeling a mixture of excited to be here and sad to be away from my family and friends.
The lyrics; “Tonight I am feeling for you, under the state of a strange land, you have sacrificed much to be here, there but for grace as I offer my hand” felt like a personal message of welcome to me.
The song just feels so intrinsically New Zealand and more so it is a reminder of the "perfect New Zealand that we get a glimpse of sometimes". To top it all off the song ends with the message "We come from everywhere. Speak Peace and Welcome Home”. Could there be a better message to end a song on?

“Bluff – The Introduction Art Exhibition” - Sunday, May 21 - Bluff
A new and unique event will take place in Bluff later this month when “Bluff – The Introduction Art Exhibition” takes place at the Lighthouse Gallery at 30 Gore Street, (SH1) Bluff on Sunday 21 May.
The Introduction Art Exhibition will introduce the Mahi Toi Bluff Arts Group to the wider public and what an introduction it will be!
Mahi Toi Bluff Arts is a group of like-minded people formed to hold workshops, and support each other in a creative hub. It is designed to be inclusive and the exhibition is being held to introduce the group, the artists within it, and their work.
Whereas most exhibitions have a theme, as an introductory project for the group, some of whom are first time exhibitors, artists are welcome to submit any work of their choice. The variety will be staggering with photography sculpture, painters, jewellery – absolutely all sorts of work. There will also be live raranga (weaving) by Flaxworx NZ.
Group member Monica Toretto says, “the exhibition will be really interesting. There is a real diverse group of talent ranging from those who have exhibited many times before through to a number who are just starting out. The group is a really good group of people and members are really supportive of each other and their work.”
In addition to a unique art exhibition there will also be a garden market with over 20 stalls and food trucks with a wide range of wares making it an event for everyone to enjoy.
The event will run from 10am to 4pm on the day and promises to be a wonderful introduction to the work of Mahi Toi Bluff Arts.
