Have your say…. Arts Murihiku want to hear from you
Arts Murihiku is carrying out research to create a baseline report which will outline what the arts currently look like in Southland.
Arts Murihiku chair Rebecca Amundsen said the main purpose for the surveys is so it we can measure the impact of the arts activity that is happening across the region.
“It will also help Arts Murihiku to develop the infrastructure and framework needed to support the long-term development of the arts sector in Southland/Murihiku.
“This is vital for working strategically together and showing funders the impact of the arts on the community to encourage them to continue to invest in the sector.”
The baseline report will be available for everyone to use once finished in August.
In late 2022 Arts Murihiku secured funding from Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage to undertake a range of activities to support the arts in Murihiku Southland.
Ther are two surveys. One is for artists, art practitioners and art organisations in Southland.
“We want to hear from people across the arts sector - dancers, musicians, singers, performers, writers and visual artists of all kinds as well as people who lead arts organisations,” Amundsen said.
The other survey is to understand the community's experience of participation and access to the arts in Southland.
“We want to hear from people from right across Southland.”
Arts Murihiku has engaged McElrea Consulting to develop this independent report.

NZ Music Month…. A Southlander’s song choice
It is New Zealand Music Month and we at The Southland Tribune are celebrating it. We’ve teamed with the crew at MASSAV Productions and throughout the month are asking various Southlanders to provide their favourite New Zealand song choice.
Today’s song selector: LOGAN SAVORY. Southland Tribune.
Artist: Lachie Hayes. Hayes is an award-winning Southland-born musician who plays a country folk blues style all of his own. Growing up watching and learning from his musical family he has been performing since childhood. He is a Southland Entertainer of the Year winner.
Logan’s song choice: Shoot ‘Em Once
Why? Southland has got some brilliant musical talent which sometimes flies a little bit under the radar. Hayes is one of those in that bracket. He’s an outstanding singer-songwriter and his catchy song Shoot ‘em Once highlights that. If you get a chance to watch Hayes perform live in and around Southland jump at the chance.
