NZ Music Month…. A Southlander’s song choice
It is New Zealand Music Month and we at The Southland Tribune are celebrating it. We’ve teamed with the crew at MASSAV Productions and throughout the month are asking various Southlanders to provide their favourite New Zealand song choice.
Today’s song selector: STEVE GIBLING. GM – Leisure and Recreation, Invercargill City Council.
Artist: Shihad – an iconic Kiwi rock band with an awesome front man in Jon Toogood and really loud and punchy drummer Tom Larkin. Their grooves are Kiwi-as, an awesome live band and they have produced a massive range of songs across the last 20+ years
Steve’s song choice: Home Again
Why? It has a really simple, but driving, drumbeat, an anthem of epic proportions that speaks to the OE that many of us have done to varying degrees of success! I love the start of this song where it begins with a clean guitar and then the simple drumbeat, then it just builds up the energy right to the end. As a drummer in a number of covers bands in Christchurch from the late 90s and early 2020s, I have had the privilege of playing this song in a range of bars and always watched the floor fill up when we roll this number out!
‘GoodBuy’ H&Js - A reader’s tribute
We received the below tribute to H&J Smith from Tribune reader Brendan Connolly and decided to share it with you.
Oh where do I get my undies
and her sexy smalls
Have a cup of tea and scone
when visiting In-laws
It’s been Invercargill’s go-to-place
for those who shop in town
What else is on the cards I ask
and destined for shut-down?
The underground loo is gone
the Museum is deceased
My old school got the arse
and was replaced by KFC
It wouldn’t have happened guys
if Tim was still the boss ( just joking )
Spare a thought for us poor buggers
who still give a toss
This shop that’s been a city institution
for just over a century
Is destined to be decommissioned
and by Xmas will be empty
But maybe we have to accept the fact
that it might be for the best
And in future get our goods on-line
cos that’s what’s called progress

Old Hokonui - Whisky & Food Match Event - May 30 - Gore Arts & Heritage
‘Hokonui’ is a legendary southern spirit first made in the bush clad Southland hills of the same name. Over 50 years of localized Prohibition gave rise to this truly indigenous cottage industry and brought forth some legendary clandestine activity in the hills, gullies and farm sheds around Gore.
Poets have written about it, musicians have sung about it, and Southland has more than its fair share of tall stories regarding the many colourful characters involved in the illicit manufacture and distribution of both good, and bad, ‘Hokonui’.
Food curator Jude Taylor and MLT representative Bob Vercoe will present an early evening event celebrating Southland’s quirky and colourful grain spirit tradition – matched with game–based, and Prohibition-era cuisine in association with the Hokonui Moonshine Museum, Mataura Licensing Trust and Thomas Green Public House and Dining Room.
Spirits from selected southern New Zealand providers will be featured, along with matched tapas-style food from the wilds of inland and coastal Southland. Featured of course will be Southland’s own ‘Old Hokonui’, but there will also be representatives from other southern distilleries presenting tastings of their new and exciting lines.
Jude Taylor will infuse a wild flavor into her themed offerings and The Thomas Green Public House & Dining Room will provide a selection of matched food platters using prime Southland produce and whiskey-infused delicacies. Finest southern craft beer and Central Otago wine will also feature. For those of more temperate persuasion, a range of specially blended Temperance Teas and traditional soft drinks will be on hand for your enjoyment. (Blurb: Southland NZ).
