Stags quest: 'Winning now for the future'
Rugby Southland’s Matt Saunders would love to be able to pick a Stags squad solely from club rugby but says even Auckland and Canterbury don’t do that. In a wide-ranging interview with The Roaring Pen podcast Saunders - the director of rugby - talked about how the short-term and long-term strategy for Southland’s high-performance setup worked together. The Invercargill-based SBS Bank has extended its sponsorship of the Highlanders for a further two years and Highlanders CEO Roger Clark says its Southland ties are as strong as ever - including with Rugby Southland. (READ MORE HERE).
Key Stag suffers likely season-ending injury
The Southland Stags have suffered a major blow with first choice No 8 Dylan Nel suffering a likely season-ending injury. Nel broke a bone in his foot during the Stags’ loss to Wellington in Wellington on Saturday. (READ MORE HERE).
Southlander helps team sprint break national record - twice
The opening day of the UCI 2023 Junior Track Cycling World Championships in Cali, Colombia proved busy but with lots of positives, without yielding medals. In the mix were Southland cyclists Caitlin Kelly, Magnus Jamieson, and Marshall Erwood. (READ MORE HERE).
Leitch set to go in Le Mans Cup round in Spain
Southland’s Brendon Leitch and Leipert Motorsport teammate Gerhard Watzinger head to Motorland Aragón in Spain for the fourth round of the 2023 Michelin Le Mans Cup. (READ MORE HERE).

Queens Park v Wanaka Southern Premier League - Saturday, 3pm - ILT Football Turf
Queens Park’s Southern Premier League team is arguably Southland’s most inform sporting team at the moment winning six of its last seven outings.
Queens Park is the sole Southland club in the competition and sits fourth in the 10-team league.
Football followers get another chance to see the team in action in Invercargill on Saturday when they take on Wanaka at the ILT Football Turf.

All Blacks v South Africa - Saturday, 6.30am - Sky Sport
Get the jug boiled, get your hot drink ready and settle in to watch Southland’s very own prop-up the All Blacks scrum in a showdown with South Africa in London on Sunday morning.
It will be the last hit before the start of the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France.
