Warriors academy initiative to extend to Southland
The Warriors NRL club and Southern Zone Rugby League have announced a new academy in Dunedin, and work is well underway to include a hub based in Southland. Southern Zone Rugby League will launch the academy in April which will operate in association with the Warriors. (READ MORE HERE).
Former sevens star pops up in Southland league comp
A former Samona sevens and 15s representative made an appearance in Southland District Rugby League’s club competition on Saturday. Although it’s rugby union that has dragged the once-described “Samoan try-scoring machine” to Southland as he prepares for the club comp and a possible shot at the Stags. (READ MORE HERE).
Aberlour destined for higher honours after Southland Guineas win
Mixed feelings ran through Kelvin Tyler as Saturday's $120,000 ILT Ascot Park Hotel Southland Guineas unfolded. The Riverton trainer saddled up the favourite, Aberlour, who jumped straight to the lead from barrier rise. However, his other runner in the race, Lady Sass, stood in the starting gates and took no part. (READ MORE HERE).
Record attendance for Invercargill parkrun
The Invercargill parkrun event has smashed its all-time attendance record a week after celebrating its sixth birthday. It has largely put a lingering post-Covid hangover to bed. (READ MORE HERE).
Steel to host inaugural Southern Showdown
Southern netball fans will get to critique the preseason progress of five ANZ Premiership teams next month. The Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel will host its inaugural Southern Showdown tournament in Dunedin from March 22 to 24. (READ MORE HERE).
Club cricket: Appleby, Invercargill-Old Boys then daylight
It appears to be Appleby, Invercargill-Old Boys and then daylight in Southland’s ILT Premier League club cricket competition as the two clubs continue to lead the way. (READ MORE HERE).
