The initial budget allocation for the CCTV project was $250,000 with the focus on inner city Invercargill. A wider CCTV approach has now been recommended at a cost of $1m. Council staff have suggested a staged approach, but a stakeholder group says it is of high importance and staging it would not resolve the concerns. (READ MORE HERE).

In July 2019 The Southland Tribune’s Logan Savory was roped in to appear in a fake beer ad made by Invercargill filmmakers Nick McGrath and James Wilkinson. When it failed to place at an American fake commercial film competition Savory simply chalked it up as one of life’s weird moments and forgot about it. That was until - much to his surprise - it appeared on the big screen at Centrestage in Invercargill recently. (READ MORE HERE).
Fonterra drops forecast Farmgate Milk Price
Fonterra Co-operative Group has dropped its 2022/23 season forecast Farmgate Milk Price range, at a time when costs are also increasing for farmers. “Since our last update in February, prices for our products on Global Dairy Trade have either declined or remained flat. “Skim milk powder prices have fallen 7% since February, and whole milk powder prices have not lifted to the levels assumed in the previous forecast.” (READ MORE HERE).
Racing befitting the legend that is George Begg
Action packed racing, star drivers, special classic cars, parades, demonstrations and plenty of family activities brought down the curtain on the 2023 George Begg Festival at Teretonga Park in Invercargill on Sunday as the legacy of legendary Drummond race car constructor, the late George Begg, was celebrated. Charities making a difference: A look at the work of the Graeme Dingle Foundation
It is going on in Southland schools and it makes a real difference to our youth. The Graeme Dingle Foundation Southern, based in Invercargill, is an important charity organisation in the lower South Island dedicated to empowering and building self-belief with local tamariki and rangatahi. Trustee Carla Forbes provides an insight about what the charity is about and what it does. (READ MORE HERE).

Ethan de Groot. New Zealand’s best loosehead prop is a Southlander, and a proud one at that.
The lad from Gore who ended up at Southland Boys’ High School has emerged as a key figure in the All Blacks setup.
He’s also the man behind one of the great quotes when on tour in the United States with the All Blacks.
In 2021 he was asked by media about his thoughts on Washington.
“Yeah, the old Washington Monument. She's no brown trout,” de Groot said humorously as he outlined his preference for Gore’s town statue.

Fear for future: The Collegiate Rugby Club’s senior team has had to default its first game of 2023 and will make a call next week as to whether it will try to continue for the remainder of the season.
