Riverton hotel on the market
Riverton’s Carriers Arms Hotel is up for sale.
Current owner Barry Cook bought the hotel five years and is ready to hand it on to someone else.
"We've had a ball [owning the hotel] ... we'll be sad to go," Cook said.
"It's time to move on, for family and personal reasons.”
The Carriers have been sponsors of the Riverton Cup horse race for 20 years and Cook didn't hesitate in continuing the commitment of its previous owners to sponsor the town's big horse race.
“We've had a great association with the Riverton Racing Club."
Cook hopes the person who buys the hotel will continue to sponsor the time-honoured race, which was first held in 1910.
On top of the Carriers Arms Hotel being put on the market, the nearby Colac Bay Tavern and Holiday Park is also up for sale.
Meanwhile, the Aparima Restaurant and Bar recently changed ownership.

Why Southland is a gem…. Reason #54
(We think it’s worth reminding ourselves why Southland is such a special place, so that’s what we’ll do regularly)
Bluff Maritime Museum. This museum contains a wide variety of maritime displays, artefacts, miniature models, boats, and photographs. Exhibits include whaling, oystering, the many shipwrecks around the challenging southern coast, the construction of the Bluff Harbour Board, and a working triple expansion steam engine from the TST Awarua. It also delves into the history of Bluff, one of the oldest European-settled communities in New Zealand, with early maps and historic artworks.
The museum's biggest attraction is the oystering boat, Monica II, situated in pride of place beside the museum on a replica sea bed with oyster dredges. It was kindly donated by the Jones family after it was retired from a life at sea. You are able to board the vessel and explore all its nooks and crannys, imagining what it is like out in Foveaux Strait dredging Bluff's delicacy.
With a continuously growing collection of exhibits and artifacts, there is always something new to see when you visit the Maritime Museum.
