Invercargill mayor stands firm on mana whenua attendance at AGM
Invercargill’s Mayor is standing firm on his stance that mana whenua representatives should not attend Local Government New Zealand’s AGM in July. At a recent Invercargill City Council meeting mana whenua representative Evelyn Cook expressed her disappointment that she hadn’t been provided any information about LGNZ’s AGM last year, and to date that had also been the case this year. NZ Music Month…. A Southlander’s song choice
This month is New Zealand Music Month and we at The Southland Tribune are keen to celebrate it. We’ve teamed with the crew at MASSAV Productions and throughout the month we will ask various Southlanders to provide a New Zealand song choice and ask them why they opted for it.
Today’s song selector: REBECCA AMUNDSEN - Rebecca is the chairperson of Arts Murihiku and an advocate for all things arts.
Artist: Devilskin - Devilskin was formed in June 2010 in Hamilton New Zealand and features the spectacular Jennie Skulander on lead vocals.
Rebecca’s Song choice: Start a Revolution
Why?: “I am a big fan of the NZ band Devilskin and Start a Revolution is one of my favourite songs from them. I like this style of music because I was a teenager in the 90s and grew up listening to all sorts of alternative music like Smashing Pumpkins, the Pixies, and Radiohead as well as classic rock from the 70s.
I find the chorus of Start a Revolution a good reminder that we all have a responsibility to make a difference and stand up for what is right; and a good motivation when it isn't that easy to keep going. I mean who doesn't want to get up in the morning and start a revolution. GET UP! GET UP!”

Grand Kyiv Ballet - Saturday May 6 - Civic Theatre, Invercargill
From the trauma and heartbreak of war in their country, to the major cities of USA and Europe, and now to the stages of New Zealand. This is the Grand Kyiv Ballet of Ukraine.
Act One – The Ukrainian showpiece Forest Song. This legendary ballet, which for over 75 years remains the pride of Ukraine. Forest Song is a magical love story, full of mysticism alongside the conflict between the human world and nature. It tells a tale of love and the fearless and brave Mavka, who longs for peace in her world, just as Ukraine longs for peace in her country today.
Forest Song is performed for the first time ever in New Zealand.
Act Two – Don Quixote. This flamboyant and festive Spanish ballet is a much-loved romantic comedy. It tells the story of a courageous but troubled man’s quest for love. Gypsies, bullfighters, lavish costumes, breath-taking dancers and an inspiring music score ensures that Don Quixote is a not-to-be-missed experience. Two sensational performances. One magnificent evening of ballet. (Blurb credit: Southland NZ).
