NZ Music Month…. A Southlander’s song choice
It is New Zealand Music Month and we at The Southland Tribune are keen to celebrate it. We’ve teamed with the crew at MASSAV Productions and throughout the month are asking various Southlanders to provide their favourite New Zealand song choice.
Today’s song selector: HAMISH MCKENZIE. SBS Bank people & support general manager.
Artist: Chris Knox. Knox emerged during the punk rock era with his bands The Enemy and Toy Love. After Toy Love disbanded, he formed the group Tall Dwarfs with guitarist Alec Bathgate.
Song selection: Not given lightly.
Why? I lived in Dunedin during the 80’s when the Dunedin Sound was in full flight and every weekend was spent going to see bands such as The Verlaines, The Chills, Double Happy’s, The Sones etc. Unfortunately, the godfather of it all Chris Knox (of Toy Love fame) had left Dunedin before my arrival, but in 1989 he released arguably the greatest flying nun song of all and (in my humble opinion) the greatest NZ love song ever, “Not given lightly”. A song with such heartfelt lyrics and raw emotion that one cannot fail to be moved.
