NZ Music Month…. A Southlander’s song choice
It is New Zealand Music Month and we at The Southland Tribune are keen to celebrate it. We’ve teamed with the crew at MASSAV Productions and throughout the month are asking various Southlanders to provide their favourite New Zealand song choice.
Today’s song selector: KRISTIE MALONE - Great South Southland Youth Futures Advisor.
Artist: Fat Freddy's Drop
Song choice: Boondigga
Why: It's so hard to choose - but Fat Freddy's Drop 'Boondigga' is still one of my all-time favourites. There was a lot of hype in the lead up to the release of Dr Boondigga and the Big BW in 2009 - everyone was hanging out for a new Freddy's album! I was working just up the road from the iconic music store Real Groovy Records in Wellington and the band did an instore album release show that spilled out into Cuba Street. Once we had our cd loaded into itunes at Fidel's Cafe it was on repeat for months and we never got sick of it. The horns, the sing-along melody and the poetic lyrics still get me good, and the song takes me back to a pretty special time in my life - and isn't musical nostalgia a wonderful thing?
