Insight: Taking a ‘proactive approach' to events
“We recognise that major events are a key economic driver for the region. They help bring visitors to our town and inject vibrancy into our city. That’s why we take a proactive approach in supporting them via a range of channels including donations, accommodation rates and being part of the organising committee – or even organising them ourselves.” (READ MORE HERE).

NZ Music Month…. A Southlander’s song choice
It is New Zealand Music Month and we at The Southland Tribune are celebrating it. We’ve teamed with the crew at MASSAV Productions and throughout the month are asking various Southlanders to provide their favourite New Zealand song choice.
Today’s song selector: JONO ‘RANGI’ DUFFY - Invercargill firefighter.
Artist: The Mutton Birds - The Mutton Birds were a New Zealand rock music group formed in Auckland in 1991 by Ross Burge, David Long, and Don McGlashan, with Alan Gregg joining a year later. Four of their albums reached the top 10 on the NZ Albums Chart.
Jono’s song choice: Anchor Me.
Why? The Mutton Birds track "Anchor Me" is one of those songs that will be heard and loved by many NZ music lovers for generations to come. For me, this song is a lyrical mastermind written by a great man Don McGlashan. He is a true legend and a great songwriter. "Anchor Me" was playing when my eldest daughter Ruby was born so not only is this a great song, it also takes me back to that moment and that is what's awesome about music, it has the ability to capture moments in time.

Out & About…
Waimumu Art Exhibition - through to May 17 - Waimumu Te Tipua Hall
The Waimumu Art Exhibition has attracted new, emerging and established artists from around New Zealand.
This year organisers are delighted to introduce our guest artists, Lynn Grace and Annie Bourque.
Grace is a proud Southlander whose artistic passion is inspired from the beautiful southern landscapes, particularly Fiordland. Grace's work in oils beautifully emphasise the light and form of the landscape while her pastel and graphite pieces are intricately drawn capturing the detail and evocative emotion/mood of a moment. Grace is a great advocate for the art community and encourages all artists to keep on the brush as such expression and creativity inspire others and brighten the society we live in.
Bourque's work draws its influence from the rural, working in mediums such as clay and wire. Annie subverts these elements to create narratives based on notions of community and the environment. The finished works capture the essence of the life cycles of everyday rural life. Annie is a multi-disciplined artist who is constantly experimenting with mediums as well as working collaboratively with other artists. Bourque’s artworks are held in public and private collections nationally and internationally. (Blurb credit: Southland NZ).
