Southland now has two cycling clubs, Cycling Southland and the new G Force Cycling Club. At this point in time, it appears there has been little dialogue between the two organisations which has prompted the suggestion the sport is splintered. (READ MORE HERE). (Paid subscriber content)
Tiwai Point smelter drives $122m profit for Rio Tinto
In 2022, New Zealand Aluminium Smelters [NZAS] produced 333,689 tonnes of aluminium. It paid $357 million to New Zealand suppliers, including $77 million to suppliers in Southland. NZAS also paid a total of $96 million in salaries and benefits to employees. (READ MORE HERE).

By-election contest continues to increase…
Invercargill City Council has received a further nomination for the looming by-election.
Lisa Tou-McNaughton has confirmed she will contest the by-election.
Tou-McNaughton joins David Hicks, Carl Heenan, Graham Lewis, and Andrea Murrell who have also officially signalled their intentions this week.
Tou-McNaughton contested the election in 2022 election but missed out.
The council is holding the by-election to fill the seat at the council table that was vacated by Nigel Skelt.
Nominations will close on Friday, June 8. Voting begins on July 13 and finishes on Friday, August 4.

Harness racing - June 5 & June 9 - Ascot Park Raceway
Next week will be a busy one for the Invercargill Harness Racing Club as they hold two race meetings at Ascot Park Raceway in Invercargill.
The first is the annual Bluff Race Day on the Monday of Kings Birthday weekend (5 June) and it is followed just four days later by a further race day on Friday 9 June.
Monday’s programme will feature nine races with the first scheduled for 11.45am and the feature race the South Port NZ Ltd Bluff Cup.
The Friday meeting is also expected to have ten races with the anticipated start time of 11.52am.
Admission to the course will be free on both days.
Following this meeting Invercargill have one more race meeting on Saturday 17 June while the Winton Club host the final meeting of the season, Southern Winter Rewards Race Day, on Friday 30 June.
