Tribune Shoutout….
Congratulations to Southland rower Shakira Mirfin for yet again stepping onto the podium on the world stage.
Mirfin was part of the New Zealand crew which claimed silver in the final of the women’s four at the World Under-23 Championships at Plovdiv in Bulgaria.
The silver medal goes with Mirfin’s gold as part of the women’s quad in 2019 at the World Junior Championships.
The former Southland Girls’ High School pupil currently attends the University of Washington and has been the benefactor of Rowing New Zealand changes which has allowed for offshore rowers to represent the country.
Keep up the good work Shakira, Southland is right behind you.
Tribune Shoutout II….
Southland’s cycling community - and the province in general - should be very proud of what one of our own has delivered this month in France.
Southland cyclist Corbin Strong has just finished his first Tour de France race - the pinnacle for road cycling on a global stage.
Strong finished the 2023 Tour with an impressive two top 10 stage finishes. It included a 9th in stage eight and another 9th on the last of the 21 stages.
Add in four top 15 stage finishes and Strong very much showed he belongs riding in the Tour de France.
He’s already ticked off the dream of most cyclists getting to ride in a Tour de France but it looks like he might have a few more ahead of him now.
Strong will have little time to put his feet up as he prepares to compete on the road at the World Cycling Championships in Glasgow next month.
